- ➤ Surprise will host its mayor’s literacy challenge from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14, awarding prizes for every 100 minutes read and free books for children; an opening party with carnival games and a petting zoo will be held on Jan. 3 at Asante Library (16755 W. Vereda Solana Drive). Surprise Independent
- ➤ On Dec. 4, Sonoran Heights Middle School student Mohammad Salam was crowned as the Dysart Unified School District spelling bee champion at the district offices after correctly spelling 'amateur' (joining top finishers Emma Rosengren, Landon Ellano-Rogers, Leila Bernhauser, and Kirsten Sanchez, who will advance to the regional contest).
