- ➤ Surprise announced the MLK Scholarship Program to support local college-bound students with tuition costs; graduating students in the spring may receive $500 awards (for accredited colleges, universities, or trade schools) as determined by the MLK Scholarship Subcommittee. Surprise Independent
- ➤ A handful of Surprise-area students reached academic milestones this past December — Robin Butler earned a bachelor of general studies from Northern Illinois University and Jason Stanfield was named a Distinguished Scholar at Rockford University for maintaining a 3.75 GPA. Surprise Independent

- ➤ Paradise Honors girls soccer team led by Coach Scott Bergeron is having a strong season in 4A. The Panthers' starting back line (Taylor Bennett, Holly Hasbrouck, Kayla Bedoya, and Brooke Dziob) holds a 10-0 record in the regular season and is ranked No. 3. Surprise Independent
