  • A bird flu outbreak at Hickman Farms has caused the loss of over one million egg-laying hens this year—raising concerns that local restaurants in Surprise may face higher egg prices soon.  ABC15

  • Surprise city council approved a budget that will add new city staff in the next fiscal year—even though overall spending is lower than this year.  Surprise Independent
  • The Maricopa County Attorney's Office brought nearly 350 death penalty cases over the past 20 years but only 41 ended with a death sentence. Experts and attorneys said the low rate raised serious concerns given the cases cost at least $300 million — and likely more since some agencies did not provide full figures.  ABC15
  • Investigative reporters from ABC15 and ProPublica revealed that Maricopa County has kept its process for selecting death penalty cases secret + nearly 350 cases have been filed over two decades with only 41 leading to a death sentence. Experts and attorneys say taxpayers face high costs + the issue has sparked calls for more transparency.  ABC15
  • The Surprise City Council has proposed lowering property taxes for the next fiscal year—this marks the second year they aim to reduce the rate. Residents may soon see a drop in their home taxes.  Surprise Independent

  • West Valley Preps announced its 2025 All West Valley Preps baseball teams featuring first, second and third teams with top players from the Northwest Valley — including Canyon View's Landon Hood as Player of the Year and Centennial's Jon Williams as Coach of the Year.
